High school adopts Tablet PC technology to enable its students

Posted under Case Studies, Mobile Products

DePaul High School is a private college prep high school in Wayne, New Jersey. DePaul recently set out to find the ideal technological solution to teach its students the fundamental computer skills they will require in college. The school had decided that they would need a device that would be portable, reliable, and durable. After extensive research, they decided that the Fujitsu LifeBook T3000 and T4000 series Tablet PCs best fit the bill.

“We wanted the technology to be a tool rather than a distraction,” says Sue Parler, DePaul’s technology coordinator and a longtime teacher. DePaul also wanted to give students and teachers the option of taking handwritten notes and turning in handwritten work or using a keyboard to write composition papers.

“• Improve the quality of the patient documentation;

• Improve the timeliness of reports and billing cycles;

• Improve communications between the clinicians in the field, office staff and physicians; and,

• Establish a strong technical foundation to build upon in the future.

“Once implemented, we saw dramatic changes in the … comprehensive plan.”

Marshfield Clinic case study webcast now available for viewing

Posted under Mobile Products

At the recent Computerworld Premier 100 event which is attended by IT professionals from around the country, Carl Christensen, CIO, Marshfield Clinic, delivered a presentation entitled “A Leader in Healthcare IT”. Marshfield Clinic was an early adopter of electronic record keeping, but it was several years before they could find a proper personal device for the physicians and staff. In his presentation, Christensen outlines how his organization adopted Fujitsu Tablet PCs to address the burgeoning health care costs, declining government reimbursements, and quality and safety issues.

Marshfield Clinic eventually deployed 2000 Fujitsu Tablet PCs to its physicians and staff. Today, the physicians are “tethered” to their Tablet PCs, and are completely dependent upon them to do their jobs. The results have been dramatic: a savings of $4.50 per record pull, improved productivity, and improved patient care quality.

Fujitsu first to offer solid state drives in pen-enabled notebooks

Posted under Mobile Products

On March 19, Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation introduced the first pen-enabled notebooks with solid state drives (SSDs). The LifeBook® P1610 and LifeBook B6210 ultra-portables will offer an option for an SSD, an advanced NAND flash-based replacement for traditional hard disk drives. The rugged-enhanced notebooks, designed for optimal portability and data protection, are ideal for medium-sized and large organizations within vertical markets, including healthcare, aviation, and field service, which require a light and compact, but highly durable mobile computer.

The 2.2-pound LifeBook P1610 convertible touch screen notebook and 3.2-pound LifeBook B6210 touch screen notebook are now offered with two flash-based SSD configurations, 16 GB or 32 GB. SSDs offer lower power consumption, enhanced ruggedness, high reliability, and improved performance.

In addition to providing significantly more durability and data protection than traditional hard disk drives, there are no moving parts to fail or heads to crash. SSDs are noise free, generate virtually no heat and weigh half as much as traditional notebook hard drives. SSDs also offer faster performance and quicker boot-up time because data access is virtually instantaneous. Unlike traditional hard disk drives there is no need to spin the platters up to speed, no seek time, and no rotational latency. SSDs also read two times faster and write up to 60% faster than other hard drives. In addition to the added durability all of this translates to a much faster experience and longer battery life.

Fujitsu Tablet PC key to customer sales automation program

Posted under Mobile Products

In a recent article published in Computing Canada, the close relationship between Canadian eyewear supplier Suntech and Fujitsu was outlined. Suntech armed its sales force with the Fujitsu P1510D convertible Tablet PC, and the results have been dramatic in terms of changes productivity and accuracy.
SunTech decided upon the Fujitsu  Tablet PC because it was big enough to display its sales templates, but small enough to carry in a briefcase or knapsack. It was also fully functional so reps wouldn’t have to go home and use a desktop to check their e-mail.
According to Mike Chang, SunTech’s IT Manager, as soon as sales reps enter a wireless environment, they’re able to send orders. “We physically will send data back to a sales rep, which will update his inventory, receivables and also customer profiles,” said Chang.
