Fujitsu laptops and Tablet PCs earn Energy Star and EPEAT awards

Posted under Mobile Products

Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation is proud that many of its laptop computers comply with the new stricter ENERGY STAR(R) 4.0 guidelines. The new guidelines, set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, are designed to reduce energy consumption and prevent greenhouse gas emissions. Fujitsu has implemented the latest technology, including high-efficiency chip designs from Intel(R), to meet the new guidelines. ENERGY STAR compliance is just one of several Fujitsu initiatives designed to promote energy conservation and reduce environmentally harmful waste.

“With deep roots in the development and pioneering of unique mobile devices, Fujitsu — by the nature of our business — has always considered energy efficiency to be a design element of our mobile PCs. And as a green company, we strive to minimize the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle,” said Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Computer Systems. “We recognize that protecting the environment is a corporate obligation and an essential business requirement. We are committed to conserving energy and natural resources, and to taking the reduce-reuse-and-recycle approach to creating eco-friendly products. Fujitsu is also working on ensuring that more of our systems in future will also comply.”

The new ENERGY STAR 4.0 guidelines require that PCs consume less energy while plugged in or on the go. Join Fujitsu in making a difference with ENERGY STAR. Go to www.energystar.gov for more information.

Additionally, Fujitsu has several products on the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) list. EPEAT, operated by the Green Electronics Council (GEC), helps buyers evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT also provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products, and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products. Virginia Tech College of Engineering continues Tablet PC initiative

Posted under Case Studies, Mobile Products

Virginia Tech is often in the vanguard by adopting new, innovative technologies in the area of personal computing. In 1984, the college was the first public institution in the U.S. to require its entering engineering freshmen to own a personal computer. In 2002, the college moved to a laptop requirement and many of its academic buildings were outfitted to offer wireless communication capabilities. Then, in 2006, VT became the largest and first public college of engineering to require Tablet PCs for its engineering freshmen.

In 2006, the Virginia Tech College of Engineering announced an industry alliance with Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation and Microsoft Corporation to support its new Tablet PC computing initiative for incoming freshmen. The alliance between Fujitsu, Microsoft, and Virginia Tech offers engineering students high levels of hardware and software purchasing power and support, and provides students, faculty, and staff with training and assistance throughout the development and implementation of new models of teaching and learning.

The Fujitsu LifeBook® T4000 Series convertible Tablet PC combines the convenience and familiarity of a notebook with the powerful and versatile functionality of a slate Tablet PC. In conventional notebook mode, the Tablet PC offers a keyboard for typing. By rotating and folding the screen, it transforms into a tablet configuration. Using a stylus, students can make handwritten notes and drawings in a manner comparable to the way in which pen and paper are used.

“We selected the Fujitsu LifeBook T4000 Series convertible Tablet PC based on its reliability and flexibility, as well as the company’s ability to support learning experiences in or outside of the classroom,” said Glenda Scales, associate dean for computing and distance learning, College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. “In our deliberations, we also balanced price, weight, service, screen size and years of corporate experience with Tablet PCs. While several vendors met our minimum computer requirements and were strong in a particular area, by selecting Fujitsu hardware we were able to meet the majority of our educational requirements for a Tablet PC.”

Virginia Tech recently posted a video on its web site documenting the implementation and success of the Tablet PC Initiative. To view it, go to the College of Engineering web site Virginia Tech web site and click on the Virginia Tech College of Engineering Tablet PC Initiative image in the top of the right pane.

Fujitsu employs strict ENERGY STAR 4.0 guidelines to conserve power

Posted under Corporate News, Mobile Products

Products that earn the ENERGY STAR use less energy and prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. With energy costs and global warming becoming a top priority for consumers, Fujitsu is committed to offering solutions that help consumers conserve energy and improve the quality of our environment.
ENERGY STAR not only saves you money, it helps protect the environment
Fujitsu ENERGY STAR qualified mobile PCs use about half as much electricity as standard equipment – saving half in utility costs.  But more than that, ENERGY STAR also makes a difference for the environment.  Did you know that the average house can be responsible for twice the greenhouse gas emissions as the average car?  That’s because every time you flip on a light switch, run your dishwasher, or turn on your PC, you use energy, which means more greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.  So the more energy we can save through energy efficiency, the more we help to reduce greenhouse gases and the risks of global warming.
ENERGY STAR 4.0 Requirements
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) recently published stricter guidelines for PCs to earn the ENERGY STAR.  Taking effect on July 20, 2007, ENERGY STAR 4.0 requires that qualified PCs consume even less energy while plugged in and while on the go.  The following Fujitsu mobile PCs already meet the strict ENERGY STAR 4.0 guidelines:

  • LifeBook® B6210 Notebook
  • LifeBook® B6220 Notebook
  • LifeBook® P7230 Notebook
  • LifeBook® P1610 Notebook
  • Stylistic® ST5100 Tablet PC

Intel’s important new platform introduced

Posted under Mobile Products

On May 9th, Intel introduced its new mobile platform which delivers a host of new technologies. The new platform (originally called “Santa Rosa”) is the latest iteration of the Centrino platform, and consists of updated Intel Core™ 2 Duo processors, Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipsets, IEEE 802.11AGN networking, new Turbo Memory technology, and Intel® 82566MM/C Gigabit Ethernet. It’s an exciting new package and promises to add improved performance, 64-bit support, outstanding video, and faster communications, boot time, and application performance.
Support for the IEEE 802.11n standard is included, even though final ratification of the latest wireless networking standard isn’t expected until late this year. Adding IEEE 802.11n should increase the range by a factor of 2 and improve throughput by 5X (under ideal circumstances), over IEEE 802.11g.
The new chipset supports an 800 MHz front side bus, and will see the use of a new socket format, known as Socket P. (Socket P is not backward compatible with the current socket used in for the Core 2 Duo mobile line.) The new socket was needed to support additional power management features, as well as the 800 MHz FSB. The new chipset will exclusively support DDR2-667 memory.
“Turbo Memory” is another feature of the new platform. Turbo Memory is a new flash memory caching technology, available in 512 MB and 1 GB implementations. The flash modules connect via PCI Express, and are expected to result in more efficient power utilization, faster booting, and faster performance of frequently used applications.
The new Intel Centrino platform is an exciting new technology which is sure to attract a lot of attention. To read more about the Santa Rosa platform, read the Intel press release.
