Lots of new Fujitsu products to kick off 2010

It’s been a while since our last Bridging the Gap. We’ve been extremely busy with the launch of a variety of new products, and we’re very anxious to share them with you.
This month we’re excited to announce the launch of eight new mobile products, ranging from a mini-notebook weighing in at just over a pound, all the way up to a desktop replacement notebook sporting an 18.4” display with HD+ resolution and NVIDIA graphics.
On the retail front, Fujitsu announced the adoption of its U-Scan self-checkout software in all of the Home Depot stores in the United States and Canada. Additionally, this month Fujitsu extended its partnership with Microsoft to help retailers increase revenue and reduce operating costs through the use of the Fujitsu Business Analytics for Retail service.
On the server side, the new generation of the PRIMERGY® Mono-Socket Servers was introduced, representing a technological leap and client value and versatility.
A couple of new Fujitsu business solutions were recently introduced. The Fujitsu application development and integration service offerings are now listed on the salesforce.com AppExchange. Fujitsu has worked in partnership with salesforce.com for six years, helping to ensure client-focused consulting with best industry practices. In a related development, Fujitsu launched end-to-end cloud services to the North American market to help enterprises reap the benefits of cloud computing.
But wait! There’s more! In the storage arena, we’ve introduced the ETERNUS ® CS solution and the ETERNUS DX90 model.
This month’s Bridging the Gap winds up with a discussion of the expansion of the Fujitsu Green IT initiative, and an interesting case study involving the adoption of Fujitsu tablet PCs by National Distributing Company’s 1000 member sales force for order entry and CRM applications.
So, as you can see, we haven’t been slouching. Although the last couple of years have been extremely challenging for everyone, we are confident that the economy has turned the corner. While it’s likely to be a slow recovery, it is our belief that the economy will end up stronger than ever due to the important lessons taught by the recession.

End-to-end cloud services launched in North America

In December, Fujitsu announced it will be offering end-to-end enterprise cloud services designed to help enterprises and ISVs in North America quickly reap the cost and agility benefits of reliable, secure cloud computing. Fujitsu enterprise cloud services were designed to let companies migrate existing multi-platform and multi-vendor mission-critical systems to enterprise clouds. Clients moving to the cloud will minimize their capital expense-intensive investment in technology and instead purchase a service that can be tailored to meet their specific business requirements, allowing them to align their IT costs with revenue.
Fujitsu has upgraded its environmentally-friendly data center at its Sunnyvale, Calif., headquarters to the Tier III level and will support the cloud application interface (API) specification, which it recently submitted to the Open Cloud Standards Incubator of the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) in an effort to promote interoperability of cloud computing environments. CoolRock Software, an ISV specializing in email management software for archiving, ediscovery and collaboration, and Intershop Communications, a leading ecommerce solutions ISV, intend to leverage the Fujitsu cloud computing solution to offer their software to clients using a SaaS business model.

New introductions into the Fujitsu ETERNUS Storage Line

Fujitsu Enhances and Expands Entry-Level ETERNUS Storage Line
On February 1, Fujitsu announced its entry-level ETERNUS(R) storage line, including new management software, the new ETERNUS DX90 model featuring storage-based replication capabilities, and the availability of space- and energy-saving base units for use with 2.5-inch drives.
As part of the Fujitsu Dynamic Infrastructure, which makes IT a flexible resource that adapts to varying demands, the new ETERNUS SF Express management software simplifies operation and maintenance across the full range of Fujitsu ETERNUS DX entry-level storage systems. The software is targeted at small and medium-sized businesses that often have no dedicated IT support specialist on staff but still need to ensure their data is properly protected.
ETERNUS SF Express management software enables the monitoring and management of multiple ETERNUS DX systems via a single, centralized console. In addition, the ETERNUS SF Express software manages advanced copy functions for snapshots and clones.
For more information about the new ETERNUS DX90, management software, and additional models supporting 2.5-inch drives, be sure to visit the Storage home page.

Fujitsu Integrates Deduplication Into ETERNUS CS Data Protection Appliances
Fujitsu recently announced its integration of data deduplication technology across its line of ETERNUS® CS data protection appliances on a global basis. Advanced deduplication provides a simple and affordable solution for organizations with a disk-based backup strategy. A new entry-level ETERNUS CS model, the ETERNUS CS800 data protection appliance, targeted at mid-market clients, also joins the line-up.
Data deduplication makes faster disk backup technology affordable. Organizations therefore gain efficiencies within their dynamic infrastructures by shrinking their backup windows via the switch to disk backup -- a faster mode of data protection than tape -- and by enhancing tape backup strategies with selected disk backup for vital data. Deduplication also provides the dual benefits of reducing network bandwidth for remote replication and cutting the risk of running out of disk space by making only a single backup copy of identical data that exist in multiple instances.
Fujitsu ETERNUS CS deduplication technology lowers holistic backup costs by reducing typical disk storage capacity requirements by 90 percent or more and reducing the cost of removable tape media administration. To learn more about the newest Fujitsu storage solution, visit the ETERNUS CS web page.

Green IT initiative expanded globally

It was recently announced that Fujitsu is expanding its green IT initiative, Green Policy Innovation, with the aim of achieving a cumulative reduction in worldwide CO2 emissions of more than 15 million tons over the four-year period from fiscal 2009 through fiscal 2012. The global expansion of Green Policy Innovation will assist in reducing the environmental impact of Fujitsu, and marks a significant step in the realization of the Fujitsu Group's medium-term environmental vision, Green Policy 2020, to support the creation of a prosperous, low-carbon society.
The international debate regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions intensified prior to the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15), which was held in Copenhagen during the first half of Dec4ember. At the most recent Group of Eight Summit, world leaders agreed on a shared international goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and to achieve this goal it is estimated that emissions must be capped by 2020 at the latest. The rapid global adoption of energy-saving products and services and the introduction of other advanced environmental technologies in both developed and developing nations are seen as essential to meeting these goals. As a global IT company, Fujitsu believes it has an important role to play in reducing the environmental footprint of its energy-efficient IT solutions, equipment and data centers.
In December 2007, Fujitsu launched its Green Policy Innovation program as a way to assist in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By developing energy-efficient IT and introducing green IT solutions throughout society, the Green Policy Innovation program initially aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by more than a cumulative 7 million tons in Japan over the fiscal 2007-2010 four-year period. In the first two years of the program, through fiscal 2008, Fujitsu achieved a reduction of approximately 2.23 million tons of CO2.
There is a great deal of information available on the Fujitsu Green IT Initiative at the home page.
