Focusing on our environment

The proliferation of “green” technology has become a major concern of the industry. This trend was clearly in evidence at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this month. (Here is a link to more information about our participation in the show). This issue of Bridging the Gap focuses on how Fujitsu is contributing (and has long contributed) to the global environment by incorporating environmental awareness into all levels of the company.
Fujitsu is guided by a set of five core principles which together make up The Fujitsu Way.  “Environment” is one of those five basic principles. Since its founding in 1935, Fujitsu has treated environmental awareness as one of its most important management issues based on our philosophy of "building in harmony with the environment". Fujitsu is keenly aware of its duties as a global corporate citizen.
In this issue of Bridging the Gap, you will learn how Fujitsu is supporting the environment, including our commitment to reduce cumulative CO2 emissions by seven million tons between fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2010. Among a variety of other articles, we also discuss the successful efforts by Fujitsu in conforming to Energy Star and EPEAT standards, and our participation in the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
As always, we hope you enjoy Bridging the Gap, and hope you will share it with associates and send us any suggestions you might have for additional content.
As we kick off 2008, it is with our wishes that yours is a healthy and prosperous year.

Fujitsu aims to achieve a seven million ton CO2 reduction

Further strengthening its initiatives to promote Green IT, Fujitsu Limited announced in December a new Green Policy Innovation project which aims to achieve a cumulative reduction of more than 7 million tons of CO2 in the period from fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2010.

Fujitsu will concentrate its know-how and technological resources in two areas: reducing the environmental burden of the IT infrastructure, and reducing customers' environmental burdens through new IT applications. Going forward, the Company will introduce new products and services that will support these initiatives and allow customers to lessen their environmental burden, ultimately helping to curb global warming.

Environmental issues—and particularly the problem of global warming—are a growing concern for the global society. In the IT field, the proportion of electric power consumed by IT continues to grow due to the widespread use of IT equipment and the increased demands of data centers. As a result, the development of an energy-saving infrastructure has become an urgent priority. There are also high expectations that new IT applications can help reduce society's overall environmental burden; interest in "green IT" is only expected to intensify.

Since its establishment, Fujitsu has regarded environmental protection as one of its most important priorities, and the Company has continuously engaged in environmental activities. Today, discharging its responsibility to society as an IT enterprise, Fujitsu is building on its past achievements to initiate the Green Policy Innovation project as a bold measure to assist its customers in reducing their environmental burden.

Corn computer creates a buzz at CES

One of the products that generated the most excitement at CES this year was the Fujitsu “corn” computer. The corn polymer computer was created by Fujitsu to utilize corn (or other plant-based materials) to create the plastic housing, thus resulting in a substance that bio-degrades much more quickly than other plastics. Given the emphasis placed on the environment at this show, people sought out the Fujitsu display to get a closer look.

A number of reviewers took the opportunity to discuss bio-plastics in general with an emphasis on the “corn-puter”, including John C. Dvorak, who interviewed our own Richard McCormack. Other reviewers included Yahoo Tech, Geek.com, GreenBiz, and The Times and Democrat. Extensive coverage of the corn computer was also provided by local and national television stations.

Climate Savers Computing Initiative aims to reduce energy consumption

Fujitsu is one of the sponsor companies for the Climate Savers Computing Initiative SM, which was formed in June of 2007. To date, more than 100 companies and organizations have joined, and the group has formed international sub-teams to expand its efforts in Japan, Europe, China and Taiwan.

According to the Climate Savers Computing Initiative web site, the group is “a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses and conservation organizations dedicated to improving the power efficiency and reducing the energy consumption of computers.

“The average desktop PC wastes nearly half the power delivered to it. The Initiative’s goal is to achieve a 50 percent reduction in computer power consumption by 2010 by producing and purchasing power-efficient products and increasing the use of power management. According to industry analyst firm Gartner, the total PC power consumption per year for a well-managed 2,500-PC-strong organization is 50 percent lower than for an unmanaged one.”

Fujitsu Limited has recognized its PRIMERGY TX120, a compact size server with the world's smallest footprint, as a "Super Green Product". The TX120 reduces CO2 emission by 37% throughout its lifecycle. The Compact Size Server PRIMERGY TX120 is an environment-conscious product which fulfills customer needs with low power consumption, space saving design and whisper-quiet operation while maintaining the toughness essential to servers to operate 24/7 to keep business running.

This product aims to be the leading standard of the industry with full commitment from the product planning stage. It reflects demanding customer needs for advanced product performance such as energy saving, space saving, and quiet operation, and also reduced environmental load.

Low power consumption, aimed to be kept at a low level as a typical desktop PC, is realized by adopting low power consuming components and controlling fan rotation which leads to high standard in energy conservation. It also makes a significant contribution to resource saving by downsizing the heat sink and power supply unit while also maintaining minimum scalability based on past customer usage results.

The Fujitsu group will continue contributing to the global environment by providing customers with environment-friendly differentiated products and expanding Super Green Products which are strengthening energy and resource saving and measures against chemical materials.

Recently, the environmental problems have been a major issue as various forms of highly unusual weather occur worldwide and international regulations are enforced. Business enterprises and local governments are shifting to focus on green procurement as demands for providing environment-conscious products increase.

Fujitsu laptops and Tablet PCs earn Energy Star and EPEAT awards

Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation is proud that many of its laptop computers comply with the new stricter ENERGY STAR(R) 4.0 guidelines. The new guidelines, set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, are designed to reduce energy consumption and prevent greenhouse gas emissions. Fujitsu has implemented the latest technology, including high-efficiency chip designs from Intel(R), to meet the new guidelines. ENERGY STAR compliance is just one of several Fujitsu initiatives designed to promote energy conservation and reduce environmentally harmful waste.

"With deep roots in the development and pioneering of unique mobile devices, Fujitsu -- by the nature of our business -- has always considered energy efficiency to be a design element of our mobile PCs. And as a green company, we strive to minimize the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle," said Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Computer Systems. "We recognize that protecting the environment is a corporate obligation and an essential business requirement. We are committed to conserving energy and natural resources, and to taking the reduce-reuse-and-recycle approach to creating eco-friendly products. Fujitsu is also working on ensuring that more of our systems in future will also comply."

The new ENERGY STAR 4.0 guidelines require that PCs consume less energy while plugged in or on the go. Join Fujitsu in making a difference with ENERGY STAR. Go to www.energystar.gov for more information.

Additionally, Fujitsu has several products on the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) list. EPEAT, operated by the Green Electronics Council (GEC), helps buyers evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT also provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products, and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products. To learn more about the EPEAT list, go to the group web site.
