Healthcare industry using technology to its advantage

The HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) conference and exhibition was held during the last week of February in New Orleans. It’s an annual affair that brings together professionals in the healthcare IT and Management Systems fields. With that in mind, this issue of “Bridging the Gap” places extra emphasis on healthcare and the important role Fujitsu products play in that vital industry.

In this issue, you will learn about a new initiative which is designed to provide free electronic prescribing to all the physicians in America by 2010. You’ll read about how Fujitsu products have been adopted by healthcare professionals for a wide variety of solutions. You’ll also learn how Fujitsu scanners are being used to electronically archive medical records in an effort to harness the enormous amount of information that currently resides in paper form.

Along with the healthcare-related information, this issue of “Bridging the Gap” describes how PRIMEPOWER® severs are being used to consolidate the data centers of one of the nation's leading providers of business information and services. Additionally, a special issue of the Fujitsu Scientific & Technical Journal has recently been posted with a wide variety of articles related to Innovative Manufacturing and Engineering, including a detailed description of how Fujitsu is addressing thermal issues in its high-end servers.

We take this time to salute all of the healthcare industry. They do a noble service for which we are all in their debt.

Initiative launched to provide free electronic prescribing to all physicians in America

On January 16, a coalition of the nation's most prominent technology companies and leading healthcare organizations (including Aetna, Allscripts, Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Sprint Nextel, SureScripts, WellPoint, and Wolters Kluwer Health) announced a national initiative to provide free electronic prescribing for every physician in America. The National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative (NEPSI) is the first nationwide effort to improve patient safety by offering a solution to the medication errors that harm millions of people each year. Preventable medication errors injure at least 1.5 million Americans and claim more than 7,000 lives each year, according to a July 2006 study by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences. In an effort to reduce these errors, the IOM has called on all of the nation's physicians to adopt electronic prescribing by 2010.

"While medication errors and adverse drug events can be common and serious, electronic prescribing is clearly a tool that can dramatically reduce errors and improve patient safety," said Nancy W. Dickey, currently President of the Health Science Center and Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs at the Texas A&M University System and formerly President of the American Medical Association. "Yet despite the many benefits of electronic prescribing, physician adoption is still modest. The situation calls for a solution that will overcome the barriers many physicians face in adopting this life-saving technology."  To read the entire press release about this important initiative, go to the Allscripts news page here

Scanner technology being used to archive medical information

HealthCare remains a paper-intensive and minimally automated and digitized industry. CBS Market watch reported that an estimated 90% of all patient information remains on paper. Widespread efforts are currently in process to scan paper records into electronic format.

Inherent problems associated with paper-based patient records include:

  • A sizeable amount of money associated with healthcare is spent for administrative costs. The New England Journal of Medicine estimates that 31 cents of every healthcare dollar is spent on administrative costs.
  • Paper-based files are often lost or misfiled. As a result, physicians see patients an estimated 40% of the time without a completed chart.
  • Physicians and staff spend a tremendous amount of time maintaining paper-based patient records.
  • To remain competitive, HealthCare providers are looking for technology that can help them to improve overall healthcare, improve the accuracy of diagnosis, and expedite transaction processing.
  • If the Health Care Quality Modernization, Cost Reduction and Quality Improvement Act is approved, it will mandate that all U.S. patient records be in an electronic format by 2011.
  • Worldwide the healthcare industry is looking for technology that can establish on-line clinical repositories to enable rapid access to shared information that can help find cures for prevalent medical conditions.

Article emphasizes importance of PRIMEPOWER in the “Real World”

In an article recently posted on the ServerWatch website entitled “Server Snapshots: Fujitsu in the Real World”, author Drew Robb discusses how Fujitsu servers are used to consolidate the data centers of one of the nation's leading diversified providers of business information and related products and services. According to the article, “First American Real Estate Solutions (FARES) is using Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER servers to consolidate multiple data centers into two main facilities. In addition to simplifying IT management and improving overall disaster recovery (DR) capabilities, the consolidation has resulted in long-term cost savings and streamlined compliance processes.”

The article continues: "Fujitsu plays a key role in providing the reliability and scalability that our mission-critical business units require," says Evan Jafa, CTO of the First American Corporation, the parent of FARES. "Serving our financial services customers, who are concerned with compliance, security and cost savings, was among the primary drivers for consolidating our many data centers into two central data centers with a single, consistent infrastructure."

Addressing the thermal requirements of high-end servers

In the special “Innovative Manufacturing and Engineering” issue of the Fujitsu Scientific & Technical Journal (FSTJ), one of the white papers discusses in detail the cooling technologies developed for Fujitsu high-end servers. The paper describes the cooling methods at several different levels: server cabinet level, system board level, and CPU package level. In the paper, author Jie Wei describes “the thermal design and development methodology of Fujitsu’s high-performance server PW2500”.

Mr. Wei also details “cooling technologies and challenges in dealing with high-performance microprocessors having a high-density and asymmetric power dissipation. With the trend towards miniaturization, high performance, and high-density packaging, there will be continuing challenges in developing high-performance, high-efficiency thermal solutions. The industry faces a critical need to enhance conventional cooling technologies and develop more aggressive and cost-effective cooling technologies.”

To read the entire text of this fascinating article, go to the FSTJ website and select “15. Thermal Management of Fujitsu’s High-Performance Servers”. While you’re visiting the website, be sure to read any of the other articles that may pique your interest.
