This month our focus is on the Fujitsu line of PRIMERGY® servers and Virtualization. Fujitsu is a global IT infrastructure provider, and we offer a complete range of servers to fill any role in today’s business. Whether your business requires affordable entry-level servers, compact and scalable blade systems, or advanced multiprocessor servers capable of handling the most demanding data center applications, the PRIMERGY line delivers x86 architecture servers with the rock-solid reliability and industry-leading performance you need. By incorporating the PRIMERGY line as your server solution, you will realize lower TCO, more efficient operations, and industry-leading design and performance. If those are benefits that interest you, be sure to investigate the PRIMERGY servers. Virtualization is currently a hot topic among our customers. The goal of Virtualization is to pool processor and storage resources for on-demand use instead of using dedicated systems for individual applications. Enhanced efficiency is one of the most important benefits of this approach since better use is made of available server and storage capacity. At the same time, the IT infrastructure can be adapted to meet new requirements faster and more easily, which makes the company itself more flexible. Employing Virtualization results in better performance, management, and I/O capabilities.

PRIMERGY positioned as leader in several Magic Quadrant reports

On January 7th, Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation announced that its PRIMERGY® industry-standard x86 servers have been positioned in several Leaders Quadrants of recently published Gartner Magic Quadrant server reports. The Fujitsu PRIMERGY rack, tower and blade servers continue to make gains in the Application, Web, High Performance Computing (HPC) and Infrastructure server categories. The PRIMERGY servers offer industry-leading design and performance and are well-positioned for the growing Windows and Linux-based application markets.

According to Gartner, “Leaders” are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction, and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market. “We believe our position in the Leaders quadrants of these Gartner Magic Quadrant server reports is a direct reflection of the excellent overall design and reliability of our PRIMERGY servers,” said Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation. “Our customers continue to confirm that the PRIMERGY server line offers excellent performance for the dollar, and the dedicated attention of Fujitsu Customer Service results in outstanding value and lower total cost of ownership playing a key role in the Fujitsu TRIOLE® strategy to optimize the IT infrastructure.”

Microsoft Systems Architecture using PRIMERGY helps cut costs and risks

The Microsoft® Systems Architecture Enterprise Data Center (MSA EDC) is designed to help you reduce deployment costs by employing best practices. The flexible modular concept of MSA enables the deployment of IT infrastructures that satisfy all scalability, Availability, and security requirements. This includes standardized documentation covering every step of a project, including the operational concept.

For MSA certification the complete PRIMERGY industry-standard server hardware is tested by Fujitsu and certified by Microsoft. A complete network test is performed, in which the entire data center is qualified. Since server systems are in the course of time withdrawn and replaced by new models, such a certification measure would quickly become outdated. By defining “server classes”, Microsoft has developed a method that renders it unnecessary for a complete recertification to be performed when a product model is changed.

PRIMERGY and PRIMEQUEST analyze structures of outer space

Fujitsu Limited recently announced that it has won an order from the Kamioka Observatory of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) at the University of Tokyo to supply a new data analysis system that analyzes the structure of outer space by utilizing a cosmic-particle observation detector known as Super-Kamiokande.

The new system will accumulate and analyze data regarding neutrinos, based on neutrino observation data from Super-Kamiokande. The IT infrastructure consists mainly of the following: a performance computing cluster consisting of 270x PRIMERGY® BX620 S3 blade servers (540 processors, 1080 cores), three PRIMEQUEST™ 520 mission-critical IA servers, an ETERNUS™ storage system, and Parallelnavi SRFS for Linux version 1.0. FlexFrame: Virtualization using mySAP Business Suite

With FlexFrame™ for mySAP™ Business Suite, Fujitsu introduced an IT infrastructure solution that makes significant TCO savings possible while operating mySAP environments. The FlexFrame Solution is based on a clear division of the IT infrastructure for mySAP solutions comprised of well-defined building blocks: computing, control, network, and storage.

Your SAP® system environment is complex and changing almost daily due to the rapidly growing demands of your business. Your business also demands 24x7 availability. What's needed is an IT infrastructure that adapts to your unique requirements, securing your investments into the future.

Utilizing four well-defined building blocks, the essential characteristics of FlexFrame are:

  • A central operating system for all SAP servers (single OS image)

  • Virtual SAP services (Database, Central Instance, etc.), allowing them to be switched back and forth dynamically between servers

  • Shared Network Attached Storage

  • Integrated high availability and management functions

To learn how FlexFrame for mySAP can help you reduce your TCO, go to the FlexFrame link.

New white paper available on “Creating a Shared-Services Infrastructure for BPM & SOA”

A white paper was recently published by Keith Swenson (Vice President of Research and Development and Amita Abraham (Senior Product Marketing Manager) of Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation. The paper outlines eight “best practices” for moving to a shared-services infrastructure. As noted in the paper:

“Shared-services is a form of ‘internal outsourcing’ that allows enterprises to achieve considerable cost benefits by utilizing a single group within the organization to create and manage specific IT services.

“The main benefits of shared-services are cost savings and rapid deployment of new applications by leveraging access to centralized expertise and infrastructure.

“Despite these benefits, many companies have been slow to move toward a shared-services infrastructure because they are confused about how to do so. This article examines what a shared-services infrastructure is, who should consider evolving to one, and best-practices for launching such an initiative.”

TRIOLE and ETERNUS VS900 Virtualization Switch alleviates data storage management headaches

Data storage systems are constantly becoming larger and more complicated. As a result, storage management has become a burden on system administrators and has created an urgent need for simplification.

The Fujitsu TRIOLE™ system infrastructure vision promotes system virtualization, automation and integration as a means to achieving such business infrastructure improvements. Servers, networks and storage are virtualized and autonomously managed using system management software centered on the Fujitsu Systemwalker Resource Coordinator. This integration of product and function not only reduces the burden on administrators but also realizes a high level of systems management. The ETERNUS VS900 Model 200 (VS900) virtualization switch provides virtualization functions for such storage domains.

Storage virtualization using VS900 enables the flexible assignment of storage space, as required, for the execution of applications and middleware. For instance, VS900 makes it possible to collect all unused disk space and build it into a large virtual disk. This ensures that storage is utilized more efficiently. When, due to increases in stored data, the virtual disk becomes ‘full’ it is easy to enlarge the available space as it has no “physical” limit.

To read the entire white paper on this important topic, go to the ETERNUS white paper page here. There you’ll also find white papers on the Fujitsu role in the Microsoft® SQL Server™ Storage Solution Review Program (also known as the “Always On” program) and the ETERNUS solution.
