Storage, servers, solutions, software – busy month for Fujitsu

It’s been a busy month for Fujitsu. In this month’s Bridging the Gap, we cover a variety of different topics, with an emphasis on the Fujitsu ETERNUS storage systems. We relate how the combination of Fujitsu storage and server solutions resulted in an early SAP PRIMEPOWER/ETERNUS implementation in North America and provide links to a couple of informative ETERNUS-related white papers. We’re also happy to report that the ETERNUS4000 Model 500 recently set a new world record for mid-range class storage systems.

We discuss the important Fujitsu role as a member of the Itanium Solutions Alliance and our recent election to the Board of Directors of the Trusted Computer Group. Fujitsu was also recently named a Sustainability Leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
In the software area, we discuss the strides being made by the CentraSite Community and the value it adds to SOA implementation.
On the mobile computer side, LAPTOP magazine named the LifeBook Q2010 as one of the top ten laptops of 2006. Additionally, Fujitsu introduced three new mobile computers – the LifeBook P1610, LifeBook T4215, and Stylistic ST5100 - each of which was designed to address the needs of different users.
We hope you enjoy this issue of Bridging the Gap, and look forward to receiving any suggestions you might have for future issues.

ETERNUS4000 Model 500 sets new world record in mid-range class storage system with SPC Benchmark-2™

In tests performed in October, Fujitsu achieved the new world record on SPC Benchmark-2™ with the ETERNUS4000 Model 500 storage system. The SPC Benchmark-2 is the Storage Performance Council's latest industry storage benchmark. The Storage Performance Council (SPC) is a nonprofit institute in which major storage vendors participate, dedicated to the evaluation of storage system performance.

SPC Benchmark-2 is designed to show the aggregate performance of the storage subsystems for large-sized, sequential data access environments, and consist of three distinct profiles:

  • Large file processing
  • Large database queries
  • Video on Demand.

The Executive Summary and Full Disclosure Report for the ETERNUS4000 Model 500 SPC Benchmark-2 test are available here.

ETERNUS white papers provide analysis of storage system architecture

The Always On White Paper for Fujitsu ETERNUS Storage System recently posted on the Fujitsu white paper website “describes a very efficient database environment that provides the combined benefits and advantages of the Microsoft SQL Server and Fujitsu ETERNUS storage systems.”
The paper goes on to say “today, IT systems and their stable operation are becoming more and more critical to success of customer’s businesses. Among the IT technologies, successful deployment and sustained availability of the database and data on storage is one of the most important tasks for IT managers. In this white paper, we discuss best practices of architecting our ETERNUS storage systems in SQL Server environments…”
A second ETERNUS-related white paper now available provides an Analysis of Fujitsu ETERNUS4000 Models 80, 100, 300, and 500. The paper was written by Evaluator Group, and contains a detailed unbiased evaluation of the ETERNUS 4000 line of storage systems.
To read both of the new white papers, as well as a number of other white papers about related topics, be sure to go to the ETERNUS Storage white paper site.

Fujitsu low cost SAP system upgrade dramatically improves reliability

Fujitsu Network Communications (FNC) recently replaced their EMC storage solution with the powerful ETERNUS Storage solution developed by Fujitsu Computer Systems and deployed a stable system platform that is a complete SAP PRIMEPOWER and ETERNUS implementation. The new landscape consists of four Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER 650 servers, seven Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER 450 servers, and a Fujitsu ETERNUS 6000 enterprise storage system with 22 terabytes of storage.

The PRIMEPOWER 450 is the ideal application platform. With its small footprint and built-in management and availability features, this server offers the flexibility and GHz level performance to fully support 24/7 business processes. The PRIMEPOWER 650 is an 8-processor, rack-optimized, mid-range server that provides better performance in high traffic conditions routinely encountered in Internet based enterprise level tasks. The ETERNUS 6000 enterprise storage system is capable of handling an enterprise’s rapidly increasing day-to-day data volumes and has enhanced base technology developed by Fujitsu engineers.

"With the new system, there has not been one outage. This low cost solution improved our hardware platform reliability, and with little to no disruption to day-to-day business, we’ve also increased productivity," said Bob Ess, director of IT operations, Fujitsu Network Communications.

Fujitsu customers can visit the data center located in Richardson, TX and see the system platform by contacting Bob Ess at 972-479-3329 to schedule a tour.

Governance and Legacy Modernization are key SOA topics addressed by the CentraSite™ Community

“Governance” is a dominant topic in today’s discussions about SOA. Governance involves all aspects of IT, and defines how authority can be exercised within existing IT processes by introducing systems and methodologies for managing IT most effectively.
The governance topic can be best approached by addressing two major considerations:
• Organizational Implications
• Technical Mechanisms
The Fujitsu Enterprise Software and Solution Group is perfectly positioned to address the technical mechanisms with its SOA Management and Governance solution: CentraSite.
CentraSite is the foundation of the open, standards-based SOA coalition “CentraSite Community”, which consists of leading SOA vendors. To quote from the CentraSite website, “As the central ‘SOA Store’ for the enterprise, CentraSite offers greater visibility and control of information, supports better decision-making, and increases productivity. It serves as a Web services and SOA asset management platform, holding all your enterprise’s metadata assets, and offering reports on usage.”
Seagull Software becomes strategic sponsor of CentraSite
In related CentraSite news, Seagull Software, a leading provider of high-performance software solutions that transform legacy business applications into service-oriented architecture (SOA) assets, announced itself as a strategic sponsor of the CentraSite™ Community. The CentraSite Community was formed to help enterprises successfully design, implement, manage, govern and optimize a SOA.
At the foundation of the community is the CentraSite SOA registry and repository, which stores the different SOA artifacts being created by architects, process modelers and developers. Seagull Software is integrating LegaSuite with CentraSite, and the Community portal provides customers with a single destination for an integrated platform of tools and middleware for SOA. CentraSite is built on the fundamental SOA principles of interoperability and reuse. The coalition of sponsoring partners in the CentraSite Community provides enterprise customers with CentraSite-enabled SOA tools. With each member that joins, CentraSite gets enhanced to support more reusable SOA components. The Community, which was founded by Fujitsu and Software AG has 20 sponsors to date.
For more information on the CentraSite Community visit the CentraSite Community website.

Trusted Computing Group Elects Fujitsu Limited representatives to Board of Directors

15 November 2006 -- The 140 members of the Trusted Computing Group have elected representatives from Fujitsu Limited, Seagate Technology and Wave Systems Corp. to the organization's board of directors for a one-year term. Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is an open industry standards organization whose specifications help vendors build products that let users protect critical data and information across a variety of devices and platforms. The new board members were elected to a one-year term. The board guides the members and its work groups in development of industry specifications for hardware and software that protect PCs and other computing devices from attacks of critical information and transactions.

The TCG-developed and maintains the specifications for the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) architecture. Fujitsu employs embedded TPM’s in several of the laptop computers it produces. TPM is a special-purpose integrated circuit that ensures user authentication, preventing unauthorized access sensitive or confidential information. TPM provides an additional layer of security for users of Fujitsu laptops.
